5 Things You Need To Know in the South Right Now

1. Dig in. Olamaie, a new restaurant in Austin, Texas, opens Aug. 26 with co-executive chefs Michael Fojtasek and Grae Nonas at the helm. The restaurant focuses on a modern Southern cuisine with a farm-to-table philosophy. Olamaie will have an entirely American wine list and a selection of beers focusing on American craft breweries. 1610 San Antonio Street.
2. Have Some Fun. The Lexington Avenue Arts and Fun Festival returns to downtown Asheville on Aug. 31 after taking 2013 off. From 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Lexington Avenue will be taken over by 3 stages of entertainment, local food venders, artists, and local brewers. Admission is free.
3. Learn “A Lot About Livin.” The Country Music Hall of Fame will unveil Alan Jackson: 25 Years of Keepin’ It Country on Aug. 29 in Nashville. The exhibit features mementos from both career and personal milestones, giving fans a look into the musician’s life. Visitors can view the exhibit through March 2015.
4. Laugh a little. Writers, actors, and comedians from around the country will take over Austin, Texas, August 26 to Sept.1 for the Out of Bounds Comedy Festival. The seven-day, live performance festival includes workshops and acts. Look for familiar faces such as Lauren Lapkus (Orange Is the New Black), Mo Collins (MADtv and Parks and Recreation), and Paul Brittain (Saturday Night Live). Tickets start at $109.
5. Eat up. The husband-and-wife team of Chef Jesse Houston and Rachel Houston opened Saltine, an oyster and seafood bar in Jackson, Miss., Aug. 20. The 100-seat restaurant features custom drink pairings from 31 taps of craft beer, a rare rum collection, and several signature cocktails. 622 Duling Ave., Ste. 201.
